The Cheektowaga Police in conjunction with the Cheektowaga Youth and Recreation Department are announcing that this year was a banner year for the Wednesday in the Park Program. The program is sponsored by the Police Department and the Youth and Rec Department together on Wednesdays each week during the summer. Youth from all parts of the town are invited to enjoy a few hours of fun, games, crafts, and lunch in Harlem Road Town Park. Activities this year included: bounce houses, activity books, rope bracelets, tie die t-shirts, and others. Police officers and Rec personnel participate in the activities with the children. There is no fee required, with the Town of Cheektowaga covering all costs for the program. Lynn Koszuta and Tim White from the Rec Department coordinate with Lt. Brian Coons and officers & staff from the Community Crime Prevention Unit to plan and present the program. The summer of 2014 saw an increase in attendance and participation of over 50 percent over last year. In the summer of 2013 an average of 58 children attended weekly. That jumped up to an average of 92 in 2014. “We are thrilled to be able to interact with and give these kids a venue to enjoy themselves and at the same time keep them off the streets” said Lt. Coons. This is the 14th year that the program has been offered. It will again be offered next summer.
