CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION UNIT

The Cheektowaga Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit plays a vital role in solving major crimes through advanced forensic science.  The primary goal is to uncover the facts surrounding a crime through physical evidence, helping to identify suspects and support criminal prosecutions.

The unit is staffed by a Detective Lieutenant and ten (10) Police Detectives. Two detectives are assigned to the CSI unit full-time, with additional detectives available to assist as needed.  All members of the CSI unit are highly trained and certified in key forensic areas such as digital photography, crime scene recreation, and the proper collection and preservation of physical evidence.

CSI Detectives respond to and process all major crime scenes. Their work includes collecting DNA, blood, fibers, hair follicles, latent fingerprints, footwear and tire impressions, surveillance video, digital evidence and conducting laser trajectory analysis. To support these investigations, the unit utilizes a wide range of specialized, high-tech forensic equipment.  While television shows often dramatize their work, real-life CSI requires meticulous attention to detail, scientific knowledge, and patience.

Due to the expertise and dedication of the CSI Unit, many serious crimes in Cheektowaga are solved each year through thorough forensic investigation.
